It feels like it was a few months ago that I hopped out of my mom’s car one late summer morning and started walking into an unfamiliar school building that would be my new school for the next four years. A blink and a half later, I am sitting at home. A high school senior with four years of memories and experiences behind me. It sounds cliche, but it really does fly by so quickly. I made a lot of amazing memories with some amazing people, but at the same time, I went through some dark times. There were times when my self-worth was less than I could have ever imagined. I felt like without makeup, the perfect body, the most fashion-forward wardrobe, and the fanciest school supplies that I was worth nothing. However, even in the darkest times, the one constant was the light that shines brighter than everything and always reassured me that I was anything but worthless: God.

I want to share a few bible verses and my interpretations of them just in case you are struggling and can’t find the light in your life. I can’t be there to give you a big hug and a shoulder to cry on, but trust me, these words are better than any hug I could ever give.

“You are Gods Masterpiece” Ephesians 2:10

You were made perfectly in Gods image. The same God who created you created the beautiful mountains, sunsets, and sights. Anytime you see a picture of an incredible place on Earth while scrolling on social media or walk outside and admire the beauty of nature, I want to challenge you to pause. Think about the fact that the beauty you see in those pictures or outside, that same beauty was used when you were created.

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” Psalms 133:13-14

Don’t doubt yourself- You are made exactly as you were supposed to be. You have everything you need to succeed and by trusting in God there is no reason to worry. If you are an affirmation person, or even if you aren’t, try incorporating this verse into your daily affirmations. When you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Even if you think it’s silly and don’t believe it at first, I promise you will soon.

“She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her” Proverbs 3:15

You are priceless. Lets put this big word into perspective… Priceless. There is nothing in this world that can compare to your worth. Not fancy shoes, expensive clothes, perfect skin, or anything else. Nothing compares to your worth in the eyes of God.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

This verse can mean a number of things, but as someone who has struggled with body image, hear this: your body is a temple. Meaning, you should treat your own body with respect. Feed yourself! Take care of yourself! For me, this meant deleting calorie counting apps on my phone and working out for myself. I wanted to be healthy and not what society claims as healthy, I wanted to treat myself with the amount of respect that God says that I deserve. For you this might mean something completely different. I encourage you to discover what this means to you and make it a goal to prioritize yourself and treating your body like a temple.
